Guerrilla Style Grilling

Went out to Walton to set up for a week long Funnel cake event. Its the trans can motocross championships. Looks pretty cool, the track is amazing, takes me back to exitebike on the NES. Any way when I was booking the event the organizers told me that we had to be set up by 1 on Monday because people start lining up to get into the park on Monday (the gates open at 6 on Tuesday morning). I figured if they are lining up that early they are gonna need food, so I took the sausage cart along too. After I set up the funnel cakes, I drove the cart to an empty parking lot set up, and pushed it up hill through the line of RV campers. It took me two hours to get through the line and I made about $100. Eventually the OPP came to make all the RVs move to a camp ground so it kind of put a Kibosh on my plans, but it was still worth it. It was really good exercise. I was drenched on sweat by the end of it but not bad for 2 hours work. On a side note... I'm not sure it was wise of the mayor of Walton and the police to ask 50 RVs to drive to a campground when most of the drivers had been drinking for 2 hours. Might not be a great reelection story when there is a pileup of RVs in town, dirt bikes strewn about. Oh he carnage.

3 days booking events

After what has been a really slow month at my regular spot, I have decided to solely focus on events. I have spent the past 3 days booking events, trying to get into community events and fairs with both the sausage cart and our funnel cake set-up. So far I have the next 3 weekends in August booked solid, and now I am going after September. Id like to do mostly fall fairs but the problem is most want vendors that have vending trucks or trailers. So now I am looking online for a used one. It’s a risk, I mean to try and grow the business before making a profit, but you’ve gotta spend it to make it.

I think it will be exciting to have a vending trailer, plus it will keep the mosquitoes out I hope!

Competition and ice cream

A customer was just chatting about how he has a fry truck that he is in the process of changing over to a funnel cake truck. Great more competition and he will be better equipped as he will have the proper equipment. Not 5 turkey fryers on top of a wooden box. Every Friday the company that I'm out in front of buys all of its employees ice cream. Its a nice gesture but I have to watch hundreds of people walk by with yummy cones on a nice sunny day. This just in!

A customer just told me that VIA has a 50% off sale on all travel if you book by Friday. He said to book thru expedia as via.ca is overloaded. Apparently they are sorry for their strike. Gotta love PR. Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry

Well I'm out here again

After two days not selling I am out peddling my meats again. Not sure what to expect today after not being here for 2 days. We will have to see. It all started Tuesday when I showed up for my buns only to find that they had forgotten to make my order. So I spent the day booking events and looking for an alternate meat supplier. It was a good day.

On wednesday, I was all set to go out and I got rained out. Way to much rain. I drove around town and noticed that most carts played hookey. My saving grace on that day was the fact that no sane person was coming out for a dog.

An hour in and we are doing better than I expected. Sweet. Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry

Why do people hate to say hello?

The one constant in this job is that people hate to say hello. I am surprised at how friendly people can be. A couple givens... I am always the initiator. I would say that those who say hi to me first would be about 5%. Then there are those that don't want to say hello but feel some pestering guilt to so I get a nod or a hello without looking at me. Those make up about 50%. There are those that speed up and answer with "good thanks, you?" but are already gone before I can answer. Those that when I say "hi how are you" give you the "not bad you" also not interested in an answer. Or the the noddders to what ever you ask them. But I wonder if they speak English well enough to understand what I saying. Those groups make up about 30%. A few other notables... (13%)
There are the attracties that know they are good looking and assume that my hello means "HELL-ooo". The ones that keep walking while rudely snubbing my hello with silence. And those that see me, cross the street so as to not have to speak to me. An the I'm listening to music so I will pretend I didn't see or hear you. Then there are the very few that smile and say hello and are sincere about it.(2%) And those actually make my day. They are not worried that by speaking to me they are contractually obligated to buy a hot dog. They just say hello. Its nice. I wish it happened more. Lost in the transition

Every single time I do funnel cakes on the weekends I always forget part of my crucial set-up on Mondays. Today I have nowhere to sit and I forgot my umbrella as well. And we finally get a sunny day. Doh!

Got my pants pulled down and spanked this weekend!

Wow, what a horrible weekend at the Great Canadian Steak Cook-off in Whitby. What started out okay quickly turned to crap when what could only be described as a flood of biblical proportions rained down upon Heyden Shore Kiwanis Park. Not only did everything get soaked, we sold very few funnel cakes. Its too bad really, we have really gotten our system down pat. The problem is that when we don’t sell any funnel cakes we lose money hand over fist. Most of the stuff we own, like the fryers, the mixers, fridge and freezer etc. but there are still items we have to fork out cash for each time we go out.

Such as: Truck rental, generator rental, the cash fee to participate in the event, grocery items to make the funnel cakes, and the highest probably would be staff costs. So with the rain, I lost about $2000 this weekend. And as soon as the rain started the organizers of the event (the Rotary Club of Whitby) packed everything up and moved the event indoors, leaving the vendors, who had paid to be there out in the rain. Only one of the food vendors was invited inside to sell his corn, the rest of us got a $300 shaft.  I know they cant control the rain, but come on, lets be honest they could have at least offered everyone a ticket inside or even a “hey too bad about the rain, can we give you a hand packing up” something to show they didn’t just grab our money and run.

The whole event wasn’t a total bust we did have an enjoyable time sleeping in the back of the rental truck over night (my $500 glasses fell out of the truck and one of the Rotarians drove over them on an ATV, he was drunk at the time, riding an ATV in his underwear).

Note to self no more events in Whitby.
